Lagos - Six people were killed and about 20 injured in weekend street clashes in a southwest Nigerian town, police said on Tuesday.
Violence broke out on Sunday at Irawo in Oyo State following a rumour that the corpse of a missing woman had been found in the residence of a prominent local leader, a police spokesperson told reporter.
He said the family of the woman believed she had been a victim of a ritual killing and they immediately took to the streets in violent protests.
He said guns, spears, bows and iron rods were used in the protests, which lasted several hours.
"We recovered six bodies from the scenes of the clashes while some 20 people were injured," he added.
He said the police have since brought the situation under control.
